Vocal Yoga VY® Founder, Clare Fanning, born in New York City, comes from a
varied life-work experience. She has integrated her vocal knowledge and certain yoga practices to help the
voice as, Vocal Yoga VY®. With over 20 years in India, she comes from
distinct schools of practice for the body, mind and voice.
From 1970 to present she has practiced
the Sri Aurobindon ‘Integral Yoga’. Artistic inflences were growing-up in a New York Broadway family of
actors, directors and producers. The Tony Award was created to honor Antoinette 'Tony' Perry, after
her death in 1946. She was Clare's grandmother. In the realm of theatre where the well
placed and healthy voice is critical, Clare, decided early to one day study under the best teacher.
Her vocal studies were in Nice, France under the Maestro Kurt Wronke-Marion,1975-78 for nearly
2,000 hours (2hr daily/ 6 days a week/ for 3 years). The Maestro also trained many doctors of the Voice and
their medical students so they might be better doctors. Often medical doctors of the voice would send their
patients to be diagnosed by the Maestro when they could not determine the problem-cause (Clare is targeting this
knowledge for the Medical Schools especially for control observation of the inhalation & exhalation
diaphragms). Maestro Marion's absolute insistance on the work involved in Sonar Memory, in order to give
precision to the vibrating vocal cords, greatly inspired his student Alfred A. Tomatis, who became an
internationally known otolaryngologist, and inventor.
The Maestro appointed Clare,
his first teacher of the Bel Canto Technique after 40 years of practice. He insisted she teach,
telling her she was his first singer he ever asked to pass on this knowledge because she had done it, many
had done it, but she had the 'inner dimension' so needed for the deeper understanding. The world
of the voice is an expression of this psychic nature. Clare accepted the challenge instead of
singing and began classes first in Paris then moved to Strasbourg where she taught seven
She began bringing this Bel Canto
knowledge to the general public in workshops and privately since it had such theraputic mechanisms thru
very specific exercises since 1983. Her Vocal Yoga Institute, a Department of Voices Corp. USA, is
for housing the research papers and future teachers network. Clare has completed writing the
guidebook with testing, audio & video DVD exercises, animations of the basic exercises with
voice, including over 21 asanas. There is a Teachers Manual, Diaphragm Development Notebook,
Teachers Class Layout Notebook and new interactive classes. Clare is still perfecting the
communication for this work.
At present she resides in the
International Township of Auroville, India, where she has spent over 20 years out of 43. She first came
in 1970. Her daughter is born here and now her grandson. It is the only not-for-profit city in the
world, attempting the ideal of human unity, where everyone is a volunteer. It now has now residents from
over 49 different countries.
Besides developing Vocal Yoga (she
was the first in India to use the term and has the Trademark there and in USA with the VY included),
she gives free websites for the services or volunteers, publishes on Amazon their books giving them 32%
out of 35% royaly to hopefully help their support their work, and many other philanthropic projects.
